Spokane_Shock.jpgThe Shock, currently of the AFL but switching to the IFL for the 2016 season, has been a tenant at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena for the last 10 years. Ryan Eucker, Shock director of operations, spoke with Venues Today about the team’s success.

What do you think has created the successful partnership between the building and the team?

Over our 10 seasons of operations here with the Shock, all of which have been played at Spokane Arena, we’ve been able to develop not only a successful partnership with the SPFD and the staff at Spokane Arena but a relationship. Our shared vision of producing a high quality entertainment experience for the communities of the greater inland northwest that is fan- and community-centered allows us to create one of the most highly touted sports environments in all of the indoor football leagues. The dedication, passion, and professionalism that is shared by the two staffs that come together on game days paired up with our amazing fan and sponsor support creates a truly electrifying event at each and every home game.

The Shock has some faithful fans, win or lose. To what is this attributed?

Earlier in August of 2015, Spokane was named as one of the top 20 “minor” league sports markets in the United States by Sports Business Journal. Our fans’ dedication and passion for Shock football as well as our community’s support of all of the varying professional, collegiate, and amateur sports teams in our region is truly something special. Beyond what the 9th Man brings to “Deaf Valley” at Spokane Arena on game days, their support of our team goes well beyond the field through community events and shared philanthropic efforts. Our organization prides itself on our customer service efforts and providing our fans with the opportunity for direct interaction with our front office, coaches, and players, which only enhances their faithfulness and creates a sense of ownership for fans of our team.

Why is The Shock switching from the AFL to the IFL for the 2016 season? What changes will fans see?

There are a number of reasons for this move in terms of the business operations side of the house, but ultimately the move from the AFL to the IFL is to ensure that we will be playing Shock football in 2016 and will be continuing the tradition of Shock football for years to come in Spokane. Since our new ownership took control of the team prior to the start of our 2014 season (Arena Partners LLC), they have emphasized a clear and precise message surrounding their commitment to retaining the Shock as a civic asset within the Spokane region. The IFL offers us the best opportunity to continue our commitment to our fans, sponsors and community. In terms of the changes that our fans will see, there won’t be much. It will still be the 9th Man at “Deaf Valley” at Spokane Arena on Friday and Saturday nights in the spring and summer months. It will still be a high quality and affordable sports entertainment.
